Chart Duels is a free online chart game and stock trading game. You get the real daily candlestick chart of a large US company, with the name and dates hidden, and decide session by session whether to buy, sell, go short or wait. At the end you see how you did against simply buying and holding, and you try to guess which company it was.
It's a way to practise technical analysis without risking money: turn on moving averages, Bollinger Bands, RSI, MACD, the stochastic oscillator, ATR, volume or the Parabolic SAR and see whether they actually help you read the chart.
Play a quick practice game, climb the ELO ranking in Ranked, race your friends in a live league where everyone trades the same stock at the same time, or survive ten stocks in a row in Story mode. All in the browser, on desktop or mobile.
Is Chart Duels free?
Yes. Every mode is free and you can play without an account. Signing in with Google is only needed for Ranked (ELO), your saved history across devices and using your username in leagues.
Is the stock data real?
Yes. The charts are real daily prices (open, high, low, close and volume) of 33 large US companies between 1995 and 2017. During the game prices are rescaled to a base of 100 and dates are hidden so you can't recognise the stock.
How does the ELO rating work?
In Ranked your opponent is the market. You win if you beat buy and hold by more than 1 percentage point, lose if you trail it by more than 1 point, and draw otherwise. Everyone starts at 1200; the first 10 games are provisional and move your rating more.
Can I play against my friends?
Yes. Create a live league, share the code and everyone trades the same stocks at the same time, one session per second, with live standings. You can also share a practice code so your friends get exactly the same chart.
Is it like ChartGame?
It's inspired by classic blind chart games like ChartGame: a random historical chart, you decide when to buy and sell, and you compare yourself with buy and hold. Chart Duels adds short selling, leverage, technical indicators, ranked ELO, live leagues, Story mode and guessing the company. It isn't affiliated with ChartGame.
Which technical indicators can I use?
Up to three moving averages (SMA or EMA, any period), Bollinger Bands, Donchian Channel, Parabolic SAR, volume, RSI, MACD, stochastic oscillator and ATR. The Learn section explains each one with sources.
Can I go short or use leverage?
Yes. “Short” bets on a fall with the same amount as a buy, and you can use ×1, ×2 or ×3 leverage. With leverage, if a position loses all of its margin it's liquidated.
Is this financial advice?
No. Chart Duels is a game for practising chart reading with historical data. Nothing on the site is a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
